Abstract

This paper aims to detect and locate a soft fault, i.e. a physical degradation, in unshielded twisted pair cables used for data transmission in a networked control system (NCS). The proposed approach is based on the analysis of the transmission coefficient (TC) in the time domain for both no-fault and faulty situations. A health indicator ratio is used to estimate the severity of the fault, while a residual is defined to localize the position of the fault. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the method.
